"...akin to a systems programmer..."
As Bill Cosby said, "I started out as a child". Then I found computers
and my life changed.
Peter T. Murphy is a Lead Network Engineer with Wayne
State University's Computing & Information Technology Division,
specializing in data communications. My primary responsibilities include
a sizeable chunk of WSU's building-level communications infrastructure and WSU's WAN. I am also a Lieutenant
in the United States Navy
Reserve. This means that one weekend a month, I serve as Operations Officer
for my unit, as well as teach data processing concepts to other sailors.
One of my pet peeves is Computer Professionals who cannot or will not
use computers to make thier own job easier. Isn't that like an oncologist
who smokes?
I don't hand out fish, I give fishing lessons. This means that,
when asked a question, I am far more likely to teach the topic than just
answer the question. This can annoy some people, but I figure that if I
can help them to understand the answer, maybe they won't ask again tomorrow.
Some of the stuff I work on (or am interested in):
(in no particular order)
- Rear Admiral Grace Hopper PhD is a hero of mine. She was a Naval
Officer and computing pioneer. One of my favorite Hopper quotes is
The most dangerous phrase in the language is, "We've always done it this way."
The US Navy thought enough of "Amazing Grace" to name a modern detroyer
after her.
google or use your favorite
search engine to learn more about her.
-
My list of security-related
pages.
-
Of course, every data comm tekkie needs standards
to
work toward.
-
I am a USSF liscenced Referee,
working mostly in Royal Oak Youth Soccer Assoc (ROYSA)
-
Naval Aviation has
been a love of mine since high school.
-
I am WSU's Technical Representative to the Merit, in support of the
Michnet
network. WSU maintains most of the equipment that represents the Michnet
in the metro-Detroit tri-county area.
